The above tour to St. Augustine was a pilgrimage sponsored by the Father Felix Varela Foundation of the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity (Catholic Church), in Miami. It was under the benevolent direction and supervision of Monsignor Agustin Roman and the help of Rev. Deacon Manolo Perez. I would like to thanks Dr. Rafael B. Abislaiman for the important data he gave to us about Father Felix Varela in San Agustin; his book "Pilgrimaging to San Agustin" is very valuable as a source of information. My special thanks to Mrs. Margarita Miranda who brought me back to my home Sunday night.

Saturday 6:30 AM we left Miami in a pilgrimage to visit the city of St. Augustine where the Cuban priest and patriot Father Felix Varela lived from 1850 to 1853. He died on February 25, 1853 and buried in the Tolomato cemetery. While living in Cuba, under Spanish rule, he was a professor in the Seminary College of San Carlos which was "the most important education center in colonial Cuba." He taught the Cubans "to think." Eventually he had to go to exile.

We arrived to St. Augustine Saturday afternoon and visited the cemetery Tolomato where Monsignor Agustin Roman told us some interesting historical details. We left St. Augustine Sunday 4:30 PM. It was a very pleasant and instructive tour.

La anterior visita a San Agustín fue una peregrinación patrocinada por la Fundación del Padre Félix Varela de la Ermita de la Caridad (Iglesia Católica), en Miami. Fue hecha bajo la benevolente dirección y supervisión de Monseñor Agustín Román, y con la ayuda de su secretario el Sr. Manolo Pérez. Quisiera darle las gracias al Dr. Rafael B. Abislaimán por los datos importantes que nos dió sobre el Padre Félix Varela en San Agustín; su libro "Peregrinando a San Agustín" es una fuente muy valiosa de información. Mi especial agradecimiento a la señora Margarita Miranda que me trajo de regreso a mi casa la noche del domingo.

El sábado a las 6:30 AM salimos de Miami en una peregrinación para visitar la ciudad de San Agustín donde el sacerdote cubano y patriota Padre Félix Varela vivió de 1850 a 1853. Murió el 25 de febrero de 1853 y fue enterrado en el cementerio Tolomato. Mientras vivió en Cuba, bajo el gobierno español, fue profesor en el Colegio Seminario de San Carlos que fue "el más importante centro de educación en la Cuba colonial." Enseñó a los cubanos "a pensar". Finalmente tuvo que irse al exilio.

Llegamos a San Agustín la tarde del sábado y visitamos el cementerio Tolomato donde Monseñor Agustín Román nos dió algunos detalles históricos interesantes. Salimos de San Agustín el domingo a las 4:30 PM. Fue un viaje muy agradable e instructivo.
